What Affects Screen Printing Pricing? The 6 Factors Explained

Screen printing quotes can feel like a black box. You ask two different shops for a price and get two very different numbers — and no explanation for why.

The truth is, every screen printing quote is built from the same six variables. Once you understand them, you can predict what a quote will look like before you ever ask, and make smarter decisions to keep your cost down.

Factor 1: Quantity — The Biggest Driver

Screen printing has a built-in economy of scale. The setup process — creating screens, mixing inks, dialing in registration — takes the same amount of time whether you're printing 12 shirts or 500. That setup cost gets divided across every piece in the order.

This is why your per-shirt cost drops significantly as quantity goes up. Bumping from 36 to 48 pieces can often lower your cost enough that you end up paying a similar total for more shirts. Always ask where the next price break is.

Factor 2: Number of Ink Colors

Each color in your design requires its own screen, its own ink setup, and an additional pass through the press. A one-color print is the most affordable option. A six-color design adds significantly to the per-piece cost.

Rule of thumb: Every color you add costs roughly $1–$2 more per shirt. A well-designed 1–2 color print can look just as sharp as a six-color design — and it costs a fraction of the price. If budget is tight, work with a designer to simplify the art, not reduce the quantity.

Factor 3: Number of Print Locations

Most orders have a single front print. Adding a back print, sleeve, or inside-neck label means additional screen setup and another pass through the press for each piece.

  • Front + back: adds roughly $3–$6 per shirt
  • Small sleeve or neck label: adds roughly $2–$4 per shirt

If you need both a front and back print with two colors each, you're looking at four total screens — that cost adds up quickly, so plan your layout accordingly.

Factor 4: Garment Type and Quality

The blank shirt itself is a significant part of your total cost. There's a real price (and feel) difference between a Gildan Heavy Cotton tee and a Bella+Canvas 3001 tri-blend — and it shows up in your quote.

Typical blank garment costs built into your per-piece price:

  • Basic cotton tee (Gildan 5000, Hanes Beefy-T): $2–$4
  • Mid-range ringspun (Bella+Canvas 3001, Next Level 6210): $4–$7
  • Premium / tri-blend: $6–$10
  • Hoodies and sweatshirts: $12–$25
  • Performance / moisture-wicking: $6–$12
  • Hats and caps: $5–$10

For a one-time event where cost matters most, a basic cotton tee gets the job done. If this is branded merchandise your team or customers will wear regularly, investing in a nicer blank is worth it — people actually keep shirts they love.

Factor 5: Artwork and Setup

Most shops charge a one-time setup fee that covers screen creation and color separation. This typically runs $25–$75 per color, depending on the complexity of the design.

Key things to know:

  • Vector files (AI, EPS, SVG) are ideal. They scale perfectly and are print-ready. If you have your logo in vector format, start there.
  • High-resolution PNG or PSD files work but may need additional prep time.
  • Low-res images from websites or social media almost always need to be redrawn — expect a design fee of $30–$75+.
  • Many shops include free design help for simple text and layout work. Ask.

At Rolled Up Tees, we include standard setup in our quoted per-piece price for most orders. What we quote is what you pay — no hidden fees.

Factor 6: Turnaround Time

Standard production is typically 7–10 business days from artwork approval. Need it faster? Most shops offer rush production for a flat fee.

At our shop:

  • Standard: 7–10 business days
  • Rush (4 business days): available for orders up to 100 pieces, $129 flat fee

If your event or deadline is approaching, ask about rush availability early — shops fill up fast during busy seasons (spring, back-to-school, and the holidays).

How to Use These Factors to Lower Your Cost

Now that you know the six levers, here's how to pull them in your favor:

Order a few more than you need. Hitting the next quantity break often lowers your per-shirt cost enough that the extra shirts cost almost nothing. Ask your shop where the next price break lands.

Reduce colors instead of quantity. Cutting from 4 colors to 2 often saves more per shirt than dropping 12 pieces from your order.

Choose a standard blank for cost-sensitive orders. For events and giveaways, a basic cotton tee is perfectly fine.

Send print-ready vector artwork. A clean AI or EPS file eliminates design fees entirely.

Plan ahead. Two to three weeks ahead of your deadline keeps you out of rush territory. Shops may also offer better pricing when they have scheduling flexibility.

Ask about bundle deals. At Rolled Up Tees, we offer 10% off orders of 72+ shirts and 20% off when you combine embroidered hats with screen printed shirts.
